What is audio mastering?
Audio mastering is the final step of music production, where a finished mix is polished for release: overall tonal balance is corrected, dynamics are controlled, stereo width is refined, and the track is brought to the loudness level that streaming platforms target. A good master translates well everywhere, from earbuds to car speakers to a festival PA.

Mastering vs. mixing: what’s the difference?
Mixing balances the individual elements inside a song (vocals, drums, bass, synths) using volume, panning and effects on separate tracks. Mastering happens after the mix: it treats the finished stereo file as a whole, refining tone, dynamics and loudness so that the track sounds professional and consistent on every system and platform. In short: mixing shapes the song, mastering prepares it for release.
Loudness targets for different destinations
Every major streaming service uses loudness normalization. It measures how loud your track is (in LUFS) and turns it down if it exceeds the platform’s target. Mastering louder than the target gains you nothing. The platform simply reduces the volume, and the track loses punch and dynamics.

Bandcamp and club playback do not use normalization at all, which is why those two targets are louder. Neither publishes an official target, so those figures reflect common practice. How to prepare your mix for mastering
You’ll get the best results if your mix is properly prepared before mastering:
Fix the mix first. Mastering polishes a good mix, but it can’t repair a bad one. If the balance feels wrong, go back to mixing before you master.
Export a 24-bit WAV or AIFF at the sample rate of your project. Avoid mastering from an MP3 if you can.
Leave 3–6 dB of headroom. Your mix should peak around −6 to −3 dB, not at 0.
No limiter on your master bus. Remove any loudness maximizer from the mix. Loudness is handled at the mastering stage.

LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale) is the international standard for measuring perceived loudness. Unlike peak meters, which show the loudest single sample, LUFS measures how loud a track actually sounds to human ears over time. Streaming platforms use LUFS for loudness normalization.
True peak measures the actual maximum level of the audio signal, including peaks that occur between digital samples. Streaming services convert your file to lossy formats like Ogg Vorbis or AAC, which can push these inter-sample peaks higher. Keeping the true peak at or below −1 dBTP prevents distortion after that conversion.
Each service chose its own normalization reference: Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud and most others settled on −14 LUFS, while Apple Music uses −16 LUFS. Bandcamp and clubs use no normalization at all.
